How to Transport Private Data on CD?

On 20 November 2007 the Chancellor of the Exchequer told Parliament that HM Revenue and Customs(HMRC) had lost two CDs containing personal and banking information belonging to all child benefit claimants. In total,the loss of these discs affected about million people. It is too early to know exactly what the impact of this loss will be on the families affected,but there are clearly major risks in connections with identity theft. This error was compounded by the fact that HMRC send out 7.25 million personalised letters of apology for the CD data loss which contained the relevant child benefit claimant's name,address,national insurance and child benefit numbers. There is a grave risk that these letters holding personal data could be used for identity theft if they fell into the wrong hands.

You can transport private data on CD without been stressed about data security. Even if you lost the CD with confidential information nobody will have access to this secret information (documents, private photos, music, video). To provide good privacy protection on the CD the data should be password protected and encrypted. All OS platforms supported by the product; Windows XP SP3, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

All you need to password protect CDs or DVDs is using GiliSoft Secure Disc Creator. The encryption software has a built-in CD and DVD burner that can create discs that have both a public area and a secure area . These secure area is password protected and can only be accessed if the correct password is supplied. The user does not need GiliSoft Secure Disc Creator on the other hand to access the CDs and DVDs.

Insert a blank or erasable disc into your recorder and Select Recorder form device list.

Click on the "Add File" button,and add files into secure are or public area.

Click on the "Burn" button to start burning your disc.

Please note that this method is only working with data CDs or DVDs and not audio or video CDs or DVDs that shall be played in standalone players. You can however use the method to encrypt a video DVD or audio CD and play it on the computer.
