How to Hide Files from Other Users on the Same Computer

A shared Windows computer can mean a family PC, a dorm computer, a reception workstation, or one machine used by several office accounts. The right protection depends on whether you only want files removed from casual view, blocked from another standard account, or unreadable even if somebody copies the data or gains administrator access.

Hide Files with File Explorer

Windows includes a Hidden attribute, but Microsoft also documents how easily Hidden items can be shown again. Treat this as a visibility preference, not a security boundary.

Right-click the target file or folder and choose Properties.

On the General tab, select Hidden, choose Apply, and confirm whether the change should include subfolders and files.

In File Explorer, open View > Show > Hidden items to verify that the item can still be revealed.

Use this when: the goal is to reduce accidental discovery. Do not use it alone for financial records, private photos, work files, or anything another user is motivated to find.

Restrict Other Accounts with NTFS Permissions

Windows access control lists assign permissions such as Read, Write, Modify, and Full control to users and groups. This is the proper built-in approach when protection should follow Windows identities.

Right-click the folder, choose Properties, and open the Security tab.

Select Edit, choose or add the target user, and grant only the permissions that person needs.

Create an Encrypted Copy When the File May Be Moved

If another user could copy the file or access the storage outside your normal Windows session, protect the content itself rather than relying only on its folder location.

Why BitLocker Does Not Hide Files from Another Signed-In User

BitLocker encrypts an entire drive and is especially useful when a device or disk is lost, stolen, or removed for offline access. After Windows unlocks that drive, normal signed-in users are governed by account permissions. BitLocker therefore complements account permissions or File Lock Pro; it does not replace them for same-computer privacy.
