How to Hide a Folder on a USB Drive and Unhide It

A USB flash drive is easy to carry and easy to open on another computer. If it contains personal photos, private documents, project files, or presentation material, hiding selected folders can reduce accidental exposure in ordinary File Explorer views.

Method 2. Hide a USB Folder with Command Prompt

The attrib command can apply Hidden and System attributes to a folder. Quotation marks allow folder names that contain spaces, so renaming the folder is unnecessary.

1. Connect the USB drive and note its drive letter, such as E:.
2. Press Win + R, enter cmd, and select OK.
3. Enter the USB drive letter followed by a colon, for example E:, then press Enter.
4. Enter attrib +h +s "Private Folder", replacing the sample name with the exact folder name.
5. Press Enter, then reopen the USB drive in File Explorer to verify the folder is hidden.

Hide an Individual Photo or File on the USB Drive

For a single photo, document, or video, include the complete file name and extension.

1. Open Command Prompt and switch to the USB drive.
2. Enter a command such as attrib +h +s "family-photo.jpg".
3. Use File Explorer Properties when you are unsure of the exact extension.
4. Press Enter and verify that the selected file is no longer shown in the normal USB folder view.

Include the file extension when hiding one photo, document, audio file, or video.

How to Unhide a Folder on a USB Flash Drive

Unhide with File Lock Pro

1. Connect the same USB drive.
2. Open File Lock Pro and enter the master password.
3. Go to External Disk > Hiding File.
4. Select the hidden folder and choose Unhide.
5. Verify the folder is visible and opens normally in File Explorer.

Unhide with Command Prompt

1. Open Command Prompt and switch to the USB drive letter.
2. Enter attrib -h -s "Private Folder".
3. Press Enter and reopen File Explorer.
4. For a single file, include its complete file name and extension.

Remove Hidden and System attributes to restore the folder to the normal USB view.

Troubleshooting: The Hidden USB Folder Is Still Missing

• Check the drive letter: Windows may assign a different letter when the USB drive is reconnected.
• Check the exact name: quote folder names that contain spaces and include file extensions for individual files.
• Show hidden items temporarily: File Explorer can confirm whether the folder carries a Hidden attribute, but protected operating system files may require a separate view setting.
• Remove both attributes: use -h -s when the folder was hidden with both +h +s.
